Things I Love: Federation Square

"The Square"
Federation Square has become another cultural icon for Melbourne. First opened in 2002, it lies across the street from Flinders Street Station on the corner of Swanston Street and Flinders Street. The Melbourne Visitor's Centre, which offers discount coupons for attractions, maps, tour information, and a gift shop, is also located on this site. Fed Square also hosts the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, aka ACMI, restaurants and bars, and a variety of art and historical exhibitions including an art gallery of Indigenous pieces. It often has cultural events or festivals going like the Japanese Summer Festival, or other events like yoga in the mornings. It also hosts live performers such as street performers, musicians, or comedians, from time to time. There's a small stage available for performances like those. The square is equipped with a large LED screen which often broadcasts sports events or films for the community to watch together as well.

It should come as no surprised that Fed Square is a popular meeting spot as it's next to Flinders Street Station and a major tram stop. It's viewed as a community space and will often host rallies or protests to bring attention to issues.

Federation Square is an easy summary of Melbourne. It's postmodern design, emphasis on the arts and performance are found all around the city. The use of the space as a multicultural hub is something that can be seen all around the CBD and suburbs with Melbourne's rising reputation as a multicultural city and the choice of new migrants. Much like the city, there's always something new going on. It's busy, but at the same time a very approachable and laid back environment for visitors.

If you visit the city, take a moment to stop at the visitor's centre here. Check out the free art galleries and ACMI (also free!) inside the building.
